What is Heuristic Play?
Heuristic play is a super awesome learning tool and it has an important role in child development. ‘Heuristic' comes from the Greek word 'heurisko', which means 'serves to discover or reach understanding of' (Goldschmied 8: Jackson, 1994). Heuristic play is play that allows children to experience and put together objects in a fun exploratory way. It can encourage physical development (gross motor and fine motor movements) as children attempt to pick up and manipulate objects through trial and error. It can improve their concentration, often engaging in play longer than they normally would. It supports children to build their creativity as they explore what they can do with the items. It can support emotional development, helping their self belief as they learn that they can do things for themselves. It also provides an introduction to mathematics with opportunities to explore space, measures and quantity. There is no ‘set’ way to play with everyday objects. In heuristic play, it is up to the children to interact with the items however they want to.
Safety First!
Small children need close supervision when playing with toys to help prevent accidents from happening. Remember, a supervised child is a safer child. Children under 3 are at risk of choking on any small items they may put into their mouths. The heuristic play sets are not for the purpose of teething, please use an appropriate teether instead.
Each item in this set is checked using a special cylinder and each item receives multiple quality checks to ensure they meet recommended sizes (due to choking risk for children under 3 years old). Please check the items regularly prior to play. If any items become damaged they may have sharp points or rough edges and a child could hurt themselves. Please immediately dispose of any items if you believe they are ever a risk and get in contact with us.
